The reconstruction of the Kính Thiên Palace constitutes a key task within the management, conservation, and promotion of the Outstanding Universal Value of the World Heritage property of the Central Sector of the Thăng Long Imperial Citadel. This task has received broad consensus from competent management authorities, the scholarly community, and UNESCO-related bodies. However, the surviving remains of the Kính Thiên Palace are limited primarily to fragmentary architectural foundations and a range of archaeological artifacts preserved underground. In order to advance towards a scientifically grounded and methodologically rigorous reconstruction of this monument, the World Heritage Centre has advised the Thăng Long - Hà Nội Imperial Citadel Conservation Centre to develop an integrated research strategy. This strategy is intended to clearly define research approaches and fundamental methodological steps for the study of traditional Vietnamese architecture of the Early Lê and Lê Trung hưng periods, focusing on the following aspects: foundations and ground-plan structure; wooden structural framework; roof forms and enclosure systems; architectural decoration; and interior spatial organisation. On the basis of this strategic framework, the research team specialising in the history of traditional architecture will concentrate on compiling, synthesising, and comparatively analysing relevant data sources. Through an objective selection and evaluation process, the team will propose research-based scenarios and solutions aimed at the reconstruction of the Kính Thiên Palace.
