Quỳnh Văn culture's pottery under the thin-section analysis

Abstract

The study used a thin-section analysis method to figure out characteristics of Quỳnh Văn culture’s pottery. Firstly samples of pottery are sliced, then observed through microscope to determine content, structure of minerals therefore to verify source of material and their role in pottery texture. The analysis results at Cồn Đất, Thạch Lạc and Cồn Chợ Mới sites, which belonged to Quỳnh Văn culture, recognised that their main potteries component contained quart, feldspat, ore and auxiliary minerals. The compound and mineral particles ingredient of pottery were stabled; texture’s percentages of background, ‘temper’ or non-plastic, and voids inside the fabric is well controlled to determine the quitely high of manufacture level of the potters. Some particularly mineral grains might be locally sourced, however others indicators need to be under specialized survey of geography to confirm exactly about the mineral source to uncover the origin of pointed base pottery.
